Mission
The department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) has the following mission:
MD1 Provide quality education to the students by establishing a comprehensive, rigors curriculum that places equal emphasis on theoretical and practical principles, and make it available to students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
MD2 Developing ethical values amongst the students combined with communication and leadership skills.
MD3 Through research and development enable the students to contribute in nation’s economy with collaboration with the industries.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)
The goal of the NAME department is to provide a methodical technique for routinely estimating and assessing the purchase of its PEOs. The department gathers input from external stakeholders, such as employers, alumni, and the Industrial Advisory Panel (IAP), in order to evaluate or quantify the PEOs' accomplishments.
PEO-1 Graduates of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering will develop a sound knowledge on mathematical, scientific and engineering fundamentals and advanced knowledge of understanding in the sector of ship design, shipbuilding and marine engineering including analysis techniques, design, developments and implementation methodologies to solve critical technical problems related to this field.
PEO-2 Graduates of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering will acquire technical and communicative knowledge with professional and industry-based education to build up successful professional careers in shipbuilding and maritime industries, government organizations and academia.
PEO-3 Graduates of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering will understand sustainable engineering practice, socio-ethical values and life-long continuous learning to adapt the innovation and changes in this sector.
PEO-4 Graduates of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering will be capable of working in the broader area of technology having the capability and responsibility of leadership and teamwork.
PEO-5 Graduates of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering will be able to positively contribute in national and global cultural, social, technological, economic and educational development of society through the ethical application of their knowledge and skills.

Undergraduate Program
Bachelor of Science (BSc):
The BSc program in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at MIST offers a comprehensive grounding in ship design, marine structures, hydrodynamics, and marine engineering. The curriculum combines rigorous theoretical instruction with laboratory work, design studios, and the use of contemporary computational tools widely adopted in the maritime industry. Students gain strong analytical, design, and problem-solving competencies, enabling them to engage effectively with the diverse challenges of naval and offshore engineering.

Postgraduate Programs
The department has seen steady growth in postgraduate enrolment, with multiple new M.Sc., M.Engg. and PhD students joining each academic year. Postgraduate teaching and supervision are supported by several highly qualified PhD-holding faculty members within NAME, ensuring strong academic guidance, while additional courses and research supervision are provided by experienced external faculty members.
Master of Science (MSc) / Master of Engineering (MEngg):
The postgraduate programs provide advanced academic and professional training across specialized fields such as marine hydrodynamics, ship structural analysis, offshore engineering, marine propulsion, and computational modeling. The curriculum is designed to strengthen research capability, support innovation in ship and offshore system design, and prepare graduates to navigate complex issues in maritime safety, sustainability, and emerging technologies.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD):
The PhD program emphasizes original research and scholarly contribution to the broader maritime discipline. Candidates undertake independent investigations that address contemporary and long-term challenges in naval architecture, marine engineering, and ocean systems. The program cultivates a high level of analytical rigor and prepares researchers for leadership roles in academia, government research organizations, and the global marine industry.

The Dept of NAME draws its strength from the experienced pool of highly professional faculties. The dept is headed by the Head of the department and consists of 2 Professors, 3 Associate Professor, 3 Assistant Professors and 9 Lecturers. The faculties are drawn in from diverse nationalities, diverse prior professional exposure (Military, Industry, Academia), diverse educational qualification and background and thus provide large areas of expertise for students to benefit. Based on requirements, domain specialists are drawn from other educational institutes like BUET, research institutes like BCSIR.

The dept of NAME provides for a conducive learning environment for the students in the form of state of the art classrooms and well-equipped laboratories. The department is home to more than 40 instrument facilities and laboratories, led by our faculty in the field of engineering and applied sciences. The instrument facilities and laboratories are available to our faculty, research staff, graduate students, and undergraduates. The department endeavors to provide its faculty members and students with adequate laboratory and other facilities, departmental undergraduate courses are laboratory intensive and post-grad students can also avail these laboratory facilities for their research and projects. We are always in the process of upgrading our equipments to faciliate students with state of the art research facilities. These labs and equipments are constantly monitors by an Officer in Charge and an Assistant Officer in Charge for the upgradation and maintainenance process. The laboratories are equipped with various testing facilities as well.  These requirements are catered by the following laboratories:

Students in Level – 1 and Level – 2 have to undertake laboratory courses (sessional) in Physics, Chemistry, Workshop, Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering too. If necessary undergraduate students can have the access to the facilities of other departments and centers during their project, thesis and research works.

To augment the learning facilities in the Department, a department library has also been established. This library is in addition to the MIST Central library located on the 7th floor of Tower - 2. The library is currently enriched with over 350 books and thesis copies of former students.  The books in the library are procured based on the recommendations of the faculty members and students and are mainly available to assist the students in their research work.

The library is well subscribed by the students and is a hub of research work and project activities undertaken by the department. It provides the students undertaking different courses an ideal platform to exchange ideas and collaborate.

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering deals with the aspect of shipbuilding and ship design. A professional in this sector must possess a vast knowledge about building and designing any structure that has to deal with water. Naval architecture involves basic and applied research, design, development, design evaluation and calculations during all stages of the life of a marine vehicle. The main responsibility of a naval architect is to design and construction a safe marine vessel. The Department of NAME at MIST hosts a national seminar or webinar every year as part of its commitment to advancing maritime research and knowledge exchange. These events feature leading researchers, industry specialists and distinguished professionals from around the world who present their latest studies, technical findings and expert viewpoints through keynote talks, paper presentations and panel discussions. In addition to the annual seminar/webinar, the department regularly arranges conferences, workshops and thematic research forums that welcome researchers, engineers, scientists and industry practitioners to participate in open academic and technical dialogue. These platforms create opportunities to share advancements in Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering, facilitate collaboration between academia and industry and inspire innovation for the nation’s maritime future.

Students of the NAME Department at MIST uphold a vibrant culture of publications and extracurricular excellence. “The Sail”, the student magazine of NAME Dept, has been published consistently since 2017 and is released every alternate year, while the “Technical Paper” edition is published in the years in between. The department strongly values sportsmanship, with NAME cricket and football teams being top contenders in interdepartmental competitions (i.e. cricket finishing runner-up in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022, football finishing runner-up in 2017 and 2018) and a major milestone achieved with the Inter-department Volleyball Championship title in 2023. The NAME debate team is also among the most accomplished in the institute, winning the interdepartmental championship in 2022 and securing runner-up positions in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Students of the department consistently perform well in athletics and indoor games such as sprint, badminton, table tennis, long and high jump and disc throw. New students are always encouraged to take part in sports and club activities, helping them develop teamwork and communication while building stronger connections with peers and faculty.

The Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) has been shaping the future of maritime innovation since its inception. Guided by our vision to provide quality education and research, we prepare graduates to meet national and global challenges in the maritime and offshore industries. In addition to contributing to blue economy and marine industrial growth, the department takes pride in its diverse academic community — welcoming not only local students but also international scholars. Notably, our alumni network includes graduates from countries such as Gambia and Sri Lanka, reflecting the department’s expanding global footprint and reputation.

We have over 320 alumni who are making significant contributions in government, private, academic, and international sectors. They hold key positions in the Bangladesh Navy, Army, and Air Force, lead projects in ship Design and Ship building firms, contribute to classification societies like BV and RINA, and teach at renowned academic institutions. Many have also expanded their horizons internationally, working in countries such as USA, UK, Australia, Qatar, Germany, and so on. Students of the NAME Department consistently demonstrate strong performance in national and international technical, academic, and co-curricular competitions. Their achievements across engineering design, innovation, leadership, and creative domain reflect the department’s commitment to practical excellence and student development.
1. A team from NAME-07 (Team Zoro) - Achieved 1st Runner Up position at 'Inter University 3D Boat Design Competition 2023' organized by BUET.
2. A team from NAME-09 became winner at STEM Venture Award Competition for Female University Level Students, 2022.
3. NAME Dept became winner at Inter-Dept Debate Competition, 2022.
4. A team from NAME Dept achieved 2nd Runner Up position in Project Showcasing at Hero Ignition 2019: National Mechanical Festival.
5. Nafisha Nubayatt Haq (Student of NAME-02) batch was honoured with BUP Vice Chancellor Award from Honorable President of Bangladesh for the year 2017.

The NAME Department frequently connects academia, industry, and alumni through structured activities such as industrial training programs, alumni meet-ups, and Industrial Advisory Panel meetings. Alumni and industry representatives regularly provide curriculum feedback during these sessions, ensuring course content aligns with current professional standards. Continuous feedback is also collected through formal evaluation forms to support ongoing curriculum improvement.
