MIST Einthoven Club
MIST Einthoven Club was established in 2017 by the students of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) of Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST).
The name “Einthoven” has evolved from an inverted imaginary equilateral triangle formed by three limb leads placed in a trigonal shape, used in electrocardiography. It is formed by two shoulder and pubis with the heart at the center and has been named after Willem Einthoven.
MIST Einthoven Club consists of a group of enthusiasts, who are eager to work collectively in the biomedical field, to develop ground-breaking solutions to the modern problems in the health sector of Bangladesh. With this agenda in mind, the club has time and again arranged many seminars to facilitate knowledge sharing and detailed discussion about challenges faced by the patients and the operators in the hospitals and other organizations. Our club members are willing to implement their understandings and capabilities to strengthen the nation’s health sector.
Purpose:
1. We focus on learning the techniques and procedures to design solutions for any problem at the interface of biology, medicine and engineering.
2. We aim to create opportunities for our club members to learn how to tackle advanced human health challenges.
3. We are emphasising on enhancing safety of diagnostic tools such as x-ray, MRI, CT scan, PET CT, etc so that they are less harmful and radioactive to both the user and operator.
4. We also target development of innovative tools and devices (such as prosthetics and imaging machines) to support medical care.
5. We have been studying the signals generated by organs such as heart, brain, muscles in order to build artificial organs, limbs and valves to restore faulty tissues.
6. Rehabilitation is one of the major parts of health industry. Our club members have visited many rehab centres to learn about the ongoing techniques of therapeutics. Researches are being conducted on how to improve these methods for producing better results for the patients.
7. In addition, our club delegates have recently been enlightened on the importance of the medical data that has been generated in the last few decades. Our club is tirelessly working to enhance their proficiency and understanding of biological and medical behaviour with the help of data analysis, computational biology and bioinformatics.
Activities:
We aim for our club activities to cover different aspects related to application of Engineering Principles in Medical Science. Currently our members are working on different such aspects which allows them to both learn and apply their knowledge and intelligence on Engineering challenges relating to Medical Science. Some examples of the subjects on which we worked/are currently working on are:
Before and after image augmentation
Model Performance
Model Performance Confusion Matrix
2. CAD (Computer Aided Design): Here are some designs we did for both learning purposes and as projects:
e.Hand Orthosis:
f.Flat foot orthosis:

3. Online Hospital System Design which can make the communication between Patients and Doctors easier. It is an IT based work which can contribute a lot in making medical services efficient.
4. Useful Medical data extraction using Computer Vision and AI. Generally processing medical image to extract useful information. For example, count the total number of cells from a microscope image.
5. Emergency Medical response system which is designed to provide emergency medical services like an ambulance with reduced delay.
6. Computer program development to test an individual’s hearing ability.
7. Our members worked/working on some projects involving electrical circuits, logic designs and robotics.
Examples are: Acquiring biological signals, controlling motor with gyroscopic sensor (can be used to control wheelchairs or help paralyzed patients), prosthetic arm, smart wheelchair.

Those are some of the project based activities we worked on/currently working on.
Other than those we also hold discussions where we talk about ideas. The purpose is to share ideas, skills and knowledge. Any member can learn about his/her favorite topic by discussing it with any other person holding the same interests. Instead of organizing classes, we believe this approach of directly involving in project brainstorming and collaboration aids an individual to work on/ learn about his/her exact interests. Classes conducted by experts are organized for topics preferred by numerous members.
We aim to prepare our club members for future obstacles which they might encounter in their professional life. Situations like job interviews, board meetings, business meetings, meetings about marketing or project, and others. Through participation in our club activities, members can learn how well they perform or improve their performances.

Event details:
We are a newly formed club. Numerous events have been arranged this year, with more upcoming events are being organized. The ones that we arranged are:
1. Conducted a workshop on MATLAB. It was a basic introductory workshop focusing image processing.
2. A web based seminar was held on during the lockdown period. The issue of the seminar was ‘The impact of COVID-19 and present challenges to prevent it’. The seminar was conducted in an informal way so that students can freely present their ideas, opinions and their contributions on a personal perspective also.
3. Quiz competitions were held focusing the application of engineering in the medical field.
4. ‘Memory Competition’ held for students within the department as well as for others.
