Department of Environmental, Water Resources and Coastal Engineering (EWCE)
About Us
With the vision of developing specialized personnel on Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering and Coastal Engineering fields, EWCE department have been introduced in MIST since January 2015 session. Currently the department is offering undergraduate program in the aforementioned engineering fields and has a subsequent plan for offering higher studies. This department is enriched with highly experienced and disciplined teaching staffs having wide vision. The programs emphasizing on engineering science and design, provides students with ample opportunity to put their knowledge into practice by solving real-world problems under the guidance of our readily approachable faculty members. This department also contributes in various national development projects. All-in-all, within a very short span of time, the EWCE department of MIST has spread its outreach throughout the nation and is playing a vital role in building an ingenious society enriched with engineering transcendence and revolution.

Mission
- To produce highly specialized manpower in environmental, water resources, and coastal engineering sectors through teaching, research, innovations, consultancy and partnerships.
- To produce students with the principles of engineering and the methodology needed for environmental, water resources, and coastal engineering practice.
Vision
- To become a world-class fully fledged school of environmental, water resources and coastal engineering that plays a pivotal role in development sector of any country.
Programs Offered
EWCE department offers the following degrees in undergraduate program:
- B.Sc. in Civil and Environmental Engineering
- B.Sc. in Civil and Water Resources Engineering
- B.Sc. in Civil and Coastal Engineering (in future)
Among the degrees mentioned above, the department is offering the first two at present and the third one may be awarded in future, if situation demands.
Short Courses: Based on the requirements from students, Govt institutions, industry etc. several short courses of one to two weeks are conducted by department of EWCE. Short courses offered by the department include –
- Short course on Plumbing design: theory and practice
- Short course on Tubewell design
- Short course on Remote sensing and GIS application
Faculties
Environmental, Water Resources, and Coastal Engineering Department is composed of a diverse group of faculties with different fields of expertise. The excellence of our faculty members is not only bound by their academic distinctions but their new ways of thinking, innovating and solving problems socially, culturally and economically. Our multi-skilled faculties are forefront nationally in advancing research and discovery. They aspire students to create an indelible academic experience through an inclusive and collaborative environment defined by excellence and impact.
Labs and Teaching Infrastructure
The Dept. of EWCE strives to develop young leaders in the sector of environment, water resource and coastal engineering. To expand the horizon of the students’ depth of knowledge, analytical skills and practical experiences, the department provides state of the art classrooms as well as well-equipped laboratories. The Environmental Engineering Laboratory and the Water Resource Engineering Laboratory owns many sophisticated instruments and flow channels. These laboratories provide commercial testing as well as consultancy services and playing significant roles in many national projects of the country.
Conferences and Seminars
Research is an integral and intensive area at Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST). Department of Environmental, Water Resources, and Coastal Engineering (EWCE) encourage its students to get involved in research work besides all their academic activities. Department of EWCE in association with Climate Lab (HEQEP) and WaterAid had jointly organized an International Conference titled as “International Conference on Climate Change and Water Security” (ICCWS 2015) on December 27, 2015 at MIST. The conference focused primarily on the application of engineering and technology, social and policy aspects for ensuring water security and reducing vulnerability of climate change. “AQUAwareness”, an integrated event and seminar for undergraduate students was also arranged by EWCE Department on 22 March, 2018, to celebrate the world water day, which strived to spread social awareness on ecological balance and water resources management and also anticipated young fresh minds to give birth to innovations and ideas that would help build a healthier sustainable environment. A workshop on Municipal Waste Management was organized by MIST Environment Club on 1st August, 2019 under the supervision of EWCE Department, MIST. EWCE department tries to give professional exposure to the UG students during their stay at MIST and so the dept organizes several educational visits.MIST Environment Club celebrated "World Environment Day 2022" in the previous year on 5th June 2022 under the direct supervision of EWCE Department. A day-long program will unfold with the inauguration ceremony, tree plantation, seminar etc. There will be also photo exhibition, stage drama, group discussion for promoting awareness and enhancing actions for the protection of the environment. This year the motto of The World Environment Day 2022 was " Only One Earth".

One of the core mission of EWCE department is to promote research that makes a difference on the big issues, encourages the rethinking of existing perspectives and facilitates publications for faculty members and students. Research and project works are done under the supervision of a faculty member who guides the student and helps to develop a sound research skill. During the last couple of years, the research work of our faculties and students have resulted in 48 Journal/book chapter publications and over 50 conference papers, having a global footprint to include countries like UK, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Portugal, India to name a few.
Contests
Department of EWCE encourages students not only in academics but also in different contests like poster presentation, quiz, photo exhibition, project showcasing). Our students perform in various contests and have certainly made their mark on national area with over 8 prizes (in 2019 alone) and have over the years participated in different fest arranged by various universities in our country.We secondly hosted the EWCE FEST-2019 on November 2019 with a better response of whole MIST students. The fest focuses on environment and water resources sectors.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Besides being focused on academic development, Department of EWCE also focuses on the development of communication and leadership skills of its students. Our students promptly take part in cultural competitions, debate competitions, leadership development programs etc. and have certainly proved their capabilities in the above activities. The Drama team of EWCE dept has been champion in inter dept cultural competition in 2020. Our students have also proved themselves in the field of sports as well. They have won the Osmany premier league football championship, Osmany premier league cricket championship, and Osmany premier league badminton championship in 2018. Our students also arrange intra dept football fest and cricket fest annually.MIST Environmental Club was founded with a view to arouse human mind inspired keeping the Environment safe and to its original nature.This club engages students in environmental workshops, scientific inquiry projects, geographical investigations, learning journeys and community outreach as well partnerships with external organizations in environmental conservation and protection which help students to lead, identify and solve environmental problems.
Our Footprints & Alumni
Graduates of the EWCE department contribute to the solution of important environment and water related problems through careers in research, government, consulting or the private sector. They are contributing to handle some of the most crucial matters affecting public health, water supplies,water treatment facilities and ecosystem viability through research or professional practice.
The first batch of graduates from EWCE department passed out in year 2019. Since then a total of over 262 students have passed out from this department.Environmental and water resources engineering provides our graduates with diverse career opportunities. The employers of our graduates include the private sector, public sector, civil society as well as academia.Our alumni work in numerous positions as e.g. planners, technical experts, and managers, and also have good possibilities to advance in different companies like CEGIS, Ahydtech Water Resources BD Ltd,IWM,WaterAid in their career.
MIST ENVIRONMENT CLUB
As concerns over the environment continue to grow, more and more individuals and organizations are taking steps to reduce their environmental impact. One such organization is the Environment Club of EWCE Department, a group dedicated to creating a greener campus and promoting sustainable living among students and staff members.
The Environment Club is a student-led organization that aims to promote environmental awareness and sustainable living on campus. The club is open to the students of this department who are interested in making a positive impact on the environment. The club hosts various events and activities throughout the year, including educational workshops, clean-up events, and sustainability campaigns.
